FPC Connectors Safety & Handling

FPC Connectors Safety & Handling

Avoiding Damage to FPC Connectors

The FPC connectors on your DISPLAX Skin Mesh touch controller are precision components that allow secure and reliable data transfer between the sensor’s ribbon cables (FPC) and the PCB.
Because these connectors are delicate, improper handling can cause permanent damage, leading to touch performance issues or complete sensor failure.

Why They’re Fragile

  • The connector locking tabs are made from fine plastic and can snap if forced.

  • Misalignment of the ribbon cable can bend pins inside the connector.

  • Excessive pulling on the cable can break the stiffener or loosen the connector from the PCB.

Best Practices for Handling

  1. Open the Connector Lock Properly

    • Always lift the lock gently to a full vertical position before inserting the ribbon cable.

    • Use a plastic opening tool or your fingernail — never metal tools.

  2. Insert the FPC Cable Correctly

    • Align the cable evenly with the connector slot.

    • Push it in until it stops, ensuring both sides are equally seated.

  3. Close the Lock with Even Pressure

    • Press in the center first, then ensure both sides are latched.

    • Avoid pressing too hard — the lock only needs gentle pressure.

  4. Avoid Cable Strain

    • Route cables so they are not bent sharply near the connector.

    • Prevent pulling or twisting during installation and maintenance.

  5. Work in a Clean, Static-Free Environment

    • Dust or debris in the connector slot can damage contacts.

    • Always wear an ESD wrist strap when working on electronics.

What to Avoid

  • Forcing the ribbon into a closed connector

  • Tilting the cable while inserting (can bend internal pins)

  • Pulling on the cable without opening the lock

  • Using excessive force when closing the connector

📌 Tip:

If a connector lock feels stuck or misaligned, stop and inspect it. Forcing it will likely break the locking mechanism.
