DisplayPort Daisy-Chain Overview

How Does DisplayPort Daisy-Chaining Work for Displax TILE?

DisplayPort daisy-chaining is a configuration method for Displax TILE video walls that allows you to connect multiple TILE units in a sequence. By grouping these units together, the Operating System (OS) detects the entire daisy-chained group as one single display.

This method uses internal video wall processing via the Screen Control Software to efficiently merge the units, allowing you to build massive video walls while bypassing standard Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) output limitations.

What are the Core Concepts of Daisy-Chaining TILEs?

  • Dual Connections: Units in a group must be daisy-chained using both DisplayPort (for video signal) and RS232 (for control and mapping).
Note: While DisplayPort is grouped, RS232 can be daisy-chained across all units regardless of their display group.

  • Single Display Detection: Once merged internally using the Screen Control Software, the OS sees the entire physical group of TILEs as a single monitor.

  • The 4K Limit: A single daisy-chained group has a strict bandwidth limitation. The total combined resolution of a single group cannot exceed 3840x2160 at 60Hz.

  • Resolution Scaling: In certain configurations, applying resolution scaling within the GPU is necessary. This ensures the displays maintain the correct aspect ratio while achieving the maximum possible resolution without exceeding the group's bandwidth limit.

How Do You Build Larger Walls? (The Grouping Strategy)

To build video walls larger than 4K (e.g., a 2x4 setup), you must create multiple independent daisy-chained groups and merge them using GPU software.

Example Workflow for a 2x4 Video Wall (8 TILE Units):

  1. Group A: Daisy-chain four units (2x2). Merge them in the Screen Control Software. Set the GPU resolution to 3840x2160.

  2. Group B: Daisy-chain the remaining four units (2x2). Merge them in the Screen Control Software. Set the GPU resolution to 3840x2160.

  3. GPU Mosaic: At this point, the OS detects exactly two 4K displays. Use your GPU Control Panel (e.g., NVIDIA Mosaic) to merge these two displays into a 1 row × 2 columns layout.

  4. Final Canvas: The result is a seamless 7680x2160 canvas utilizing 8 physical TILE units but requiring only 2 GPU outputs.

What are the Benefits of Daisy-Chaining?

  • Bypasses Hardware Limits: Standard GPUs only support up to 4 outputs. Daisy-chaining allows you to run an 8-screen (or larger) setup on a standard GPU.

  • Optimized Processing: The GPU only has to process and manage a few large displays rather than rendering 8 or more individual screens.

  • Scalability: The configuration remains highly stable and makes it easy to scale up to massive installations.

Important Configuration Rules

To ensure a stable daisy-chain setup, always follow these prerequisites:

  • Do not exceed the 3840x2160 resolution limit per daisy-chained group.

  • Always complete the RS232 mapping in the Screen Control Software before applying GPU Mosaic settings.

  • Maintain a consistent refresh rate across all groups (60Hz is recommended).

  • Always use high-quality, certified DisplayPort cables.
